Project - Fostering Peaceful Communities - A United Sri Lanka

We are pleased to report on the successful program conducted on the above theme, which was the first of many planned as a Rotary District 3220 – Sri Lanka & Maldives initiative in fostering peaceful communities towards a united Sri Lanka. These programs will focus on the culture and practices of all the great religions that are prevalent in Sri Lanka to create a greater understanding and appreciation be people of all communities.

In Rotary, it is pleasing to note that our strength is our members and our diversity having members from all the faiths so it is natural that we should promote and foster peaceful communities and coupled with service, it makes our existence justifiable.
As July marked the annual period of fasting for all from the Islamic faith, it was decided to focus on the practices and culture of religion of Islam and hence the significance of fasting and what it means to Muslims. In this regard an event to highlight the ‘breaking of the fast’ or ‘Ifthar’ was organized on Monday the 21st of July 2014 at the Galadari Hotel.

The program commenced at 5.30 pm and brief, informative presentations on communal harmony were delivered by the following religious dignitaries:

Buddhism – Rtn PP. Ven. Dr Bandagiriye Somawansa Thero (RC Kolonnawa)

Christianity – Rtn Rev. Father Lalith Lakshendra Kumar (RC Badulla)

Hinduism – Vidyanithi Brahma Shri S. Kuhananda Sharma Kurkalswamy

Islam – Ash Sheik Khalid Mahmood Moulavi

Rtn Saif Ramzi from RC Colombo Mid Town made an audio, visual presentation highlighting the significance of the ‘fast’ to muslims that provided much in terms of an insight, awareness and knowledge to participants of other faiths present.

The call for the daily sunset prayer ‘Azan’ at 6.32 pm also announced the time of the breaking of the fast for the day where all participants experienced the customary food followed by a further refreshments.

It was a program well received with an attendance of over 100 participants who comprised of Rotarians, spouses, Rotaractors, Interactors and other well wishers from all communities.

The program was hosted by the Rotary District 3220 – Sri Lanka & Maldives and was organized by the Rotary Clubs of Colombo Mid Town, Kandy, Badulla & Colombo Uptown.
